The special feature of Hess Kindergarten is the green atrium, which not only provides a natural environment for the children's outdoor activities, but also serves as the core of the overall design. The corridors that surround the atrium form a spacious and complete circle, and the staircase that extends into the atrium connects the circles on the first and second floors, making this place like a theater, with the atrium as the stage and the corridors as the auditorium.

The roof garden of the auditorium on the third floor is another quiet outdoor activity space. Students can use the staircase on the west side of the auditorium to climb up from the corridor loop on the second floor. The porch at the southeast corner of the garden provides a pathway through to the tutorial classroom area. The roof garden is located above the intersection of Zhi Shan and Zhi Ping Streets, which is the best place to view the Zhi Shan Children's Park and a friendly corner for students to gather and talk after class.

The building's overall appearance is composed of simple geometry, and the white skin on the exterior walls is made of non-toxic paint sourced from natural stone to minimize the visual burden caused by too many lines and colors. The white courtyard is made up of three building volumes and a large platform. Compared to the design of a “teaching building”, the dispersal of the building volumes into three provides a more complete courtyard for children to play in, and the enclosure of the volumes also allows the courtyard to open up under the visual surroundings without any dead space for safety.
