The Taichung Education Building of Hess International Education Organization is a mixed-use building, with spaces for kindergartens, tutorial classes, adult classes, office space for teachers and administrators, as well as a cafeteria and meeting space. Located in a densely populated urban area, the building acts as a “vertical campus”, stacking spaces with different functions to suit its location. In the design process of volume stacking, many balconies and sky courtyards are intentionally left. The different heights of the floors also provide teachers and students with comfortable outdoor spaces.
 
The base of this vertical campus is a nursery school, and the L-shaped three-story volume and the Little Hippo Kindergarten on the north side of the building enclose a courtyard-like space, the center of which is a children's outdoor playground, with the corridors on the second and third floors acting as a spectator gallery around the playground. The corridors on the second and third floors are like spectator stands surrounding the playground. The large terrace on the east side of the third floor is a place for rest and conversation during class, and is also the best viewpoint over the campus of Dadun Elementary and Junior High School. The fourth and fifth floors are used for tutoring classes, while those on the sixth floor and above enjoy the two outdoor gardens on the sixth floor and the roof.
 
The neighboring buildings along the south side of the river are tall towers built close to the road, and the continuous cluster of buildings creates a “Street Wall” as tall as a city wall. The vertical campus, which retreats layer by layer, allows the compressed vision to be released from the street wall, making it particularly unique and eye-catching. The extensive use of white non-toxic paint and interlocking three-dimensional grilles on the façade, in addition to achieving the effect of cooling and shading, also makes use of the sculptural sense created by natural light and shadows, as well as color accents, giving the Taichung Educational Building a more dynamic expression.
