The “Tanzi Bicycle Overpass” is one of four sub-projects in Taichung City under the “Heart of the Town” competitive forward-looking initiative of the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior. These four sub-projects are:
1. Heart of the Town Tanzi Project: Railway Green Corridor
2. Redevelopment of the Tanzi Gongyi Park Site and Jiyi Government Agency Site
3. Renovation of the Tanzi Elementary School Cultural Overpass and Cultural Corridor
4. Tanzi Bicycle Overpass

The Tanzi Bicycle Overpass is a multi-level bridge designed exclusively for bicycles. It emphasizes the experience of “passing through” rather than “stopping,” showcasing dynamic “speed” rather than static “stagnation.” The design concept originated from a vividly colored curved segment that abstractly depicts a rhythmic sense of forward movement and leaping.
We extracted this colored curve and developed it into an outward-leaning bridge arch, serving as the primary structure supporting the deck. The reason for the outward tilt is to use this motion to counterbalance the weight of the arch against that of the deck slab. Consequently, in orthographic projection, the two arcs of the arch and the deck slab form a perfect symmetrical line within an asymmetrical structure.
The curved profile of the colored bridge arch also evokes the image of a “gateway.” Viewed from a distance along Provincial Highway No. 3, the orange bridge arch resembles a rainbow, connecting both ends while simultaneously forming a gateway to the heart of the town.
