Site Plan
The Humanities Building occupies the greatest gross floor area in Tunghai University’s main campus. Thus, the compaction of its spatial density is our primary concern. Our concept is a “raised courtyard house”, which is an interpretation of Tunghai’s traditional courtyard-styled building parti, it turns the composition of research rooms / offices / discussion rooms of various departments into a stacked cluster.

Conceptually, the whole building is taken as a solid volume excavated by various activities. Therefore, the ground floor is immensely opened to accommodate the high density of student activities in the campus. It minimizes mutual interruptions among activities / instruction / research to the least.

Design Strategy:
The idea of the design plan starts from a series of transformation of a courtyard. A smaller rectangle was cut from a square of about 50 meters × 50 meters to form an inner courtyard. The cut portion was placed at the northwestern corner of the original plane. In this way, an outdoor plaza could be defined by encircling the space from the neighboring College of Foreign Language at the western side. When this plane was embedded into the base, the correspondence between its form and the environment became the primary consideration of the design. The slanted opening at the southeastern side preserves the memories of the original site, and it leads the scenes of The Luce Chapel (designed by I. M. Pei & C.K.Chan in 1963) into the central courtyard.
