Sustainable Community in situ
“in situ”—the term “in situ”—is applicable across many different fields and generally refers to something being physically present at a specific location. In the arts, it pertains to the direct connection between a work of art and its surrounding environment, emphasizing the real-time interaction between artistic creation and nature, society, the city, and people. In architecture, “in situ” primarily involves understanding and responding to the site’s environment, including connections with the local community and users. Strictly speaking, the concept of “in situ” does not originally refer to utilitarian, objective conditions, but rather to the grasp of temporal and spatial continuity in the present moment, extending even to the intrusion of human consciousness—not a collection of scattered, fragmented experiences.
The substantive definition of “sustainability” within a community is: a living community that imposes a low environmental burden, is economically sustainable, and fosters mutually supportive social relationships. It is not merely a green building certification, but a state where, after residents have lived there for ten or twenty years, they find that common facilities remain functional, management fees have not skyrocketed, and neighbors are there to lend a helping hand when needed. “Sustainability” is a dynamic survival strategy, not merely a set of architectural specifications.
To preserve the site’s inherent “presence,” maintain continuity across time and space, and integrate social housing to achieve the goal of a “sustainable community”—creating a living community that supports itself environmentally, economically, and socially— In light of this, we propose the following five design strategies, aiming to design the Taichung Central Market Good Homes as a “Sustainable Community in situ”:
1. Integrate into the existing urban block context
2. Open up the community’s shared network
3. Create a shared environment where nature permeates
4. Build a high-quality, barrier-free communal living environment
5. Constructing energy-efficient, sustainable, and people-friendly architecture
