Late on the night of July 31, 2014, the Kaohsiung “81 Petrochemical Gas Explosion”—like a “beacon of fire”—devoured the trembling, buckling streets. The blast claimed the lives of 32 people and injured 321, spanning over 70,000 square meters, the disaster damaged 810 buildings, 1,068 households, alleys, street systems, and utility lines. The scars on the earth’s surface, torn open by the explosion, bear the imprint of endless pain and terror.
 
This commemorative art project, “Ripples of Memory,” is an unfolding “temporal landscape” that closely follows the multi-layered textures of the earth’s surface, soothing the souls that yearn for connection. It seeks to transform the scars etched into the land and identify the coordinates of emotional solace within the site’s collective memory, transforming the Kaohsiung incident—written in the courage and hope of those who endured the “81 Gas Explosion”—into an urban landscape that embraces tomorrow’s “hope” and connects the spectrum of memory.
